Welcome to Midcentury 2024

Well, it’s been a while, mostly because somehow my password got changed and when I tried to gain access to this website, it created a new one. But, magically, I was able to get on today. So, big update.

First, our front yard progress.

I grew up in this house. My parents had it built to their specifications in 1961. When they passed on, my brother and I inherited the house. My husband and I purchased the house from him in 2015 and began the remodeling process in 2013. It was a long process and we weren’t able to move in until 2014.

The photo below is my mom in the 1980’s (maybe).

The picture above was taken in 2013, when we first decided to buy out my brother and move in ourselves.

I’ve updated our header above to show what the house looks like now. So, we’ve made a few changes in the front yard since my last entry a few years ago.

The above photo was taken in 2019.

In 2017 we upgraded the deck. ( See our blog post here). It added new life to the house and a nice new living space. But we felt there was more space we could capture that would give us even more outdoor living space.

The above two photos are the area where we decided to add another patio in the front yard, along with a nice sidewalk leading up to the patio and the deck instead of the decorative rock walkway that had become weed-ridden and ugly. These photos were taken in 2017 prior to the backyard remodel.

The above three photos were taken in 2019 as the backyard was being finished up. Area where we decided to add a new patio and walkway. Pretty messy.

Finally, in 2022 (we were delayed by the Pandemic) we added the patio with a walkway from the street to the patio and deck constructed of old fashioned cement and aggregate rock, which was common for Midcentury Modern hardscape. We already had aggregate hardscape leading up to the front door that my parents had installed when the house was built.

It only took them two days to install the patio, fencing and walkway and what a difference it made to our yard. (Actually it put our poor tiny lawn area to shame.)

We also extended the fence line so that we would have more privacy from our next-door neighbors who are very nice people but are very close to our house.

Last summer we got some new furniture because we had stolen the furniture from the backyard that we were using. Now it is a very comfortable spot for us to spend some time enjoying our front yard and the neighbors and other folks as they walk around the neighborhood. And since it sits above the road, it is cozy and semi-private.

This year we will add some plants, some wall ornaments and jazz up the lawn and a few other things. But we are quite happy with this new addition.

We’ve enjoyed having friends over for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres on the new patio.

Even our dog, Professor Harvey, enjoys being in the front yard and occasionally running thru the sprinklers. (But, my oh my, does our lawn look crummy.)

Now onto fixing up the front yard in front of the patio.
